Great question.
Quilt Price = Raw Materials + Hours of Labor
The “raw materials” number is based on the square yardage of the quilt. For example, a baby quilt is approximately 1.5 square yards.
Quilt-shop quality fabric averages approximately $10/yard.
Batting costs about $2.76/sq. yard.
Binding is another half-yard of fabric.
The thread I use is about $8/spool.
So, our baby quilt is $15 for the front fabric (without considering seams and scraps, this is only fabric used, not purchased), $15 for the back fabric, $5 for batting, $5 for binding, and an estimated half-spool of thread at $4. And that gives us our materials at $44, rounded to $45.
These hours estimates are for simple, straightforward design and piecing. If your quilt requires complex piecing, and therefore more hours, we will discuss that up front and you will be quoted accordingly.
Baby (42″x50″)
$45 materials + est. 15 hours labor = $375
Throw (50″x60″)
$55 materials + est. 20 hours labor = $495
Large Throw (65″x75″)
$90 materials + est. 25 hours labor = $640
Twin (66″x88″)
$105 materials + est. 35 hours labor = $875
Full/Queen (88″x88″)
$140 materials + est. 40 hours labor = $1020
